Sports Premium

The Sports Premium is a government funding initiative designed to enhance the quality of physical education (PE) and sport in primary schools across the UK. At Thornton Primary School, we use this funding to provide all pupils with access to high-quality PE lessons and extracurricular activities. The funding allows us to invest in new equipment, offer specialist coaching and provide staff training to ensure children benefit from a broad and inclusive PE curriculum. For more details on how we allocate our funding, please see our Sports Premium Report below.

Key achievements July 2025 and impact

Staff have benefited by working with external coaches to support their confidence and competence.

Playtime activities have continued to work well with timetabled football and basketball sessions and a range of other activities. A mix of both boys and girls are taking part in different games and activities using different sports equipment. Sports Ambassadors have led activities for younger children in reception & KS1 (this has also been linked to Well-being Club).

Weekly swimming lessons at Castle Rock for year 5/6 pupils. All children have participated.

Increase in SEND pupils participating in extra-curricular activities.

Increase in PP pupils participating in extra-curricular activities.

Weekly Active Maths activities timetabled across the school and celebrated in Friday’s celebration assemblies.

Year 6 participated in cycling proficiency (Bikeability) in summer term, with 95% of children taking part. School was able to loan bikes and helmets to the children for those who did not have access (7 children).

Regular table tennis sessions at lunchtime during the summer term.

Weekly sports activities at afterschool club on designated evening (Monday). Activities include: yoga, badminton, circuit training and gymnastics. Subsidised for disadvantaged pupils.

ME sports run lunchtime sport provision to children across the school, focusing on different sports and physical activities.

The school has purchased the following equipment to support the teaching of PE/extra-curricular activities: volleyballs, footballs, basketballs, volleyball posts, badminton sets. These were ordered after an audit of current equipment and liaising with staff.

Continued use the Twinkl Move (PlanIt) scheme which has been successful in incorporating different sports and physical activities. Use across the school ensures coverage of curriculum and consistency of delivery from teaching staff.

The school has continued its participation in local competitive sport events and activities through the use of HBSSPAN. Sports and activities were chosen with the intent of improving competitiveness, trying new sports, developing teamwork, improving resilience and increasing participation in order to improve inclusivity.  Some of this year’s events included: football, netball, basketball, new-age curling and multi sports and also participation in the Get Moving Festival aimed at improving participation for children who are sometimes reluctant to get involved in sports.  There have also been activities to specifically encourage girls’ participation and SEND pupils.

Through our membership of HBSSPAN, we were able to try some new activities this year, including new-age curling, bee-netball and table tennis. This is was a key objective of our remit.

New-age curling was very popular with the children, and especially with some less-active pupils. The school was able to borrow two full sets for a term for all children to be able to have the opportunity to try it.  The school intends to purchase a kit next year.

In July, the school ran sports days for both KS1 and KS2 pupils. The children had the opportunity to participate in different competitive races in which to gain points for their school house team. Parents were welcomed to the school to watch their children compete. Feedback was very positive. Ambassadors took part in the organisation and running of the events.

Year 5/6 pupils took part in Water Safety Event at Whitwick and Coalville Leisure Centre.  The leisure centre has chosen to adopt our school through their adopt a school initiative.  They have also provided workshops to Reception and KS1.  Flyers have been distributed to parents of upcoming events to encourage out of school participation.

PE lead has kept records of pupils taking part in afterschool activities this year and has encouraged teachers to select as many pupils as possible from each year group.

Attainment for PE has increased:
