Geography Curriculum Overview

We love geography at Thornton!

At Thornton Primary School, through our geography curriculum, we aim to expand geographical vocabulary, increase our children’s knowledge and curiosity of the wider world and promote high aspirations. We seek to create a life-long love of the subject, through teaching our pupils about diverse places, people and natural processes. Through investigating our local environment, the study of places in Britain, Europe and the wider world, our desire is to provide our children with a sense of awe and wonder about the world they live in and to help them gain an understanding of how they can shape the world in the future.

Our curriculum ensures children learn how to acquire and develop a range of geographical skills and experiences in the classroom and through fieldwork in the local area. We aim to foster in our pupils a deep fascination and understanding of geography as they move through the school. We enrich the geography curriculum with enrichment activities that allows pupils to explore their local area and make comparisons to places further away. Through geography, we promote British Values (Democracy, Rule of Law, Respect and Tolerance, Individual Liberty).
